At the time of completing this (very provisional) exploration of the links between the planetary crisis and the contemporary global strategic crisis, it seems important to us, in order to bring out its meaning, to take a detour through literature, in particular through the War of the United Nations the full triumph of the British industrial revolution, and of the imperial military-industrial grip that this bestowed upon Britain at this point in its history, this novel describes from the point of view of a “Middle Englishman” the invasion of England by the Martians. This detour allows us to approach the global situation created by the Anthropocene, by grasping the global stake that is imposed on us, on the horizon of a few decades. The contemporary encounter between the modification of the planetary environment and the needs of contemporary societies is giving rise to an increasing number of potentially dangerous and conflictual situations which can tip hundreds of millions of people, even billions of people, into dangerous situations. ‘extreme violence, even wars of survival, as is already the case in a growing number of countries and regions.
